This is the Veeck VK 1560 it's brand-new pen display
I've not heard of this brand before so today we're gonna be testing it out.
So what is this thing ?
It's a pen display basically it's an
extra monitor that you can plug into your Mac or Windows computer you can draw
directly on the screen using the included pen.
There have been a whole bunch of these 15.6 inch displaytablets pop up over the last year it's a really nice size to draw it's not too
big it's not too small it's like the Goldilocks size and generally the specs on
this pen display is the same as it is on all the others in this price and size
range. we get a full HD display 1920 pixels by 1080 pixels , the colors looked
really good when I plugged it in and has a 94% Adobe RGB and I didn't have to
color correct or do anything like that after I plugged it in there are adjustment buttons along the back of the device. if you do want to fiddle with
the settings the pen that comes with has 8,192 levels of pressure sensitivity
and the display also has shortcut keys along the side.
And as you would expect they're totally customizable like
all of the other 16 inch displays out there that I've reviewed the screen is
not bonded that means that there is some space between where the screen is and
the glass above it ,that means when your pen tip hits the glass you can see the
cursor below it and there is that gap in space this is often referred to as
parallax the distance between where your pen tip is and where the cursor
appears on the screen underneath it .
The only 16 inch display that's currently
not doing that is Wacom Cintiq Pro as of now we haven't seen that kind of
screen trickle down into these budget displays yet but I wouldn't be surprised
if we see that start to happen in the next year or so as we have seen with some
of these smaller Huli on products.
There is also a built-in stand , well a semi built-in stand
, it has a standard release latch on it ,and it's pretty solid and it gonna
move once you get it set up, although I should mention that at the lowest angle
it's a little bit tippy especially if you press in on the corners tilting it up
just a little bit helps that a lot.
One thing you probably noticed is there is a molded pen
holder along the right hand side of the device I've never seen that before
works pretty well ,there's a nice divot along the side so you can get your
finger around it and kind of get it out easily ,and if you're one of those
people who's always losing their pen it's really nice to have a dedicated place
to put it.
The pen is pretty comfortable to hold it is pretty light the
whole thing is made of a soft rubber flares out at the tops it's very
comfortable in the hand there are also two buttons along the sides I've gotten
to the point where I just disabled those as soon as I get a tablet with them I
find myself always accidentally pressing them while I'm drawing they are
customizable though so you can set them to whatever you want the pen is also
battery free so you're never gonna be swapping batteries in and out or plugging
it in to charge it .
The pressure of the pen itself feels pretty good it holds
pressure well fast hats lines do well I'm didn’t get any fish hooks on those
lines ↓↓
line quality : and
that's where I see some problems here I do get some jitter on this pen both on
Mac and one of drawing on Windows even when I bust out a ruler to reduce some
of the natural shakiness of my hand is definitely noticeable.
Now on a lot of the things that I review I get this jitter
and one of the things I've been trying to do in recent reviews is is kind of
come up with a jitter scale like how do you define what is acceptable and and
what's not like what is like a tablet color and here I'd put this device
somewhere in the middle I don't think it kills it but it's definitely there
and something you should be aware of .
So here is my test I take a look at this pen in Photoshop
and I turn on stroke smoothing and I take a look at what percentage of stroke
smoothing has to turned on in order for this pen to lose its jitter in
Photoshop at about five percent is definitely cleaner when I bump it up to
about ten percent I feel like that's a good range that that's a quality line
that I'm getting there. ↓↓↓
I drew most of my artwork with about fifteen percent on to
get a clean line. So even though this pen did have some jitter to it I felt
like it was something that I can knock out pretty easily and I would kind of
classify it in the acceptable range .
So speaking about the pros and the cons of this device
overall I thought it was a good screen it had good color those are some of the
better things about it I think some people are really gonna like the little
divot that depends sits in .as far as cons it really just comes down to that pen
jitter and if you want to pick up something that doesn't and when I look at all
of the other devices out there that are in this category I think I've reviewed
five of them now .
This is the first display or any kind of product I've ever
reviews that was manufactured by Veeck and overall I have to say if this
is your first time out they've done a pretty good job with this and I hope they
continued to make more and more devices.
